Passpoint, also known as Hotspot2.0, is a set of technical specifications that enable automatic, secure, and seamless WiFi access for devices. Passpoint has been a standard supported on all major brand name access points since 2012. And it is used almost exclusively in the mobile carrier Wi-Fi market place. Currently less than 1% of enterprises use Passpoint however 100% of enterprises would benefit from pursuing a passpoint connected wifi network. At the highest level view possible Passpoint is the connector between 5G and Wi-Fi, uniting outdoor and indoor connected spaces.
Benefits of Passpoint for CTOs:
Increased security: Hotspot 2.0 uses WPA2-Enterprise for authentication, which provides a higher level of security than traditional WPA/WPA2-Personal. This helps to protect the network from unauthorized access and attacks.
Simplified connectivity: Hotspot 2.0 allows devices to automatically connect to the network using their SIM card, eliminating the need for users to manually enter login credentials. This can improve the user experience and reduce the need for technical support.
Improved network management: Hotspot 2.0 enables network administrators to manage and configure the network more effectively, including the ability to prioritize bandwidth for different types of devices and traffic.
Seamless handover: Hotspot 2.0 allows devices to automatically switch between different wireless networks, such as between a cellular network and a Wi-Fi network, without interruption. This can help to improve the continuity of service and reduce the impact of network congestion.
Support for multiple authentication methods: Hotspot 2.0 supports multiple methods of authentication, including SIM-based, EAP-SIM, EAP-AKA, and EAP-TLS. This provides a more flexible approach for network administrators.
Cost-effective: Enabling Hotspot 2.0 in your network allows you to offload data from the cellular network to Wi-Fi which can lower your costs for data use, and also allow customers to use your wifi instead of the cellular network which can save them money as well.
Overall, Hotspot 2.0 can provide a number of benefits for CTOs, including improved security, simplified connectivity, improved network management, and support for multiple authentication methods, as well as seamless handover and cost-effectiveness.
